Henry Stanley "Hank" Nowak was born November 24, 1950, in Oshawa, Ontario. A left wing, he spent two years with the Oshawa Generals of the OHA before being selected 87th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft. He was assigned to the minor leagues, where he played for the Quebec Aces, Richmond Robins, and Hershey Bears before reaching the NHL. Between 1973 and 1977, Nowak appeared in 180 NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings, and Boston Bruins, playing as a physical, defensive-minded checker who contributed occasionally on offense.
