"Happy" Emms

Dossier

Leighton "Hap" Emms (January 12, 1905 – October 23, 1988) was a Canadian ice hockey left winger and defenceman who played 17 seasons of professional hockey, including 10 seasons and 320 games in the National Hockey League. He began his career in junior hockey in the early 1920s before signing with the Montreal Maroons in 1926. After retiring as a player, Emms spent 33 years in the Ontario Hockey Association as owner and coach of the Barrie Flyers, Niagara Falls Flyers, and St. Catharines Black Hawks, with his teams appearing in eight Memorial Cup tournaments and winning four. His perpetually sour expression earned him the nickname "Happy Emms," later shortened to "Hap."
