Herbert Martin Gardiner (1891–1972) was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman who played in the NHL from 1920 to 1929. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he skated for the Calgary Tigers of the Western Canada Hockey League, winning the WCHL championship in 1924, before joining the Montreal Canadiens and later the Chicago Black Hawks. In 1927, Gardiner won the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player, having played every minute of every game for the Canadiens that season. He later served as head coach of the Black Hawks during part of the 1928–29 season and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1958.
