John William McCartan (born August 5, 1935, in Saint Paul, Minnesota) was a goaltender who played college hockey and baseball at the University of Minnesota from 1955 to 1958, earning First Team All-America honors after the 1957–58 season. After graduating and entering the U.S. Army, he joined the American Olympic hockey team and won a gold medal at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, where he was named the tournament's All-World goaltender. He appeared in 12 NHL games with the New York Rangers across the 1959–60 and 1960–61 seasons, and later played 42 games with the Minnesota Fighting Saints of the WHA from 1972 to 1974. He was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983 and the IIHF Hall of Fame in 1998.
