Jack McKinney
Dossier
John Paul McKinney (1935–2018) was an American basketball coach who played college ball at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia under coach Jack Ramsay, leading the Hawks to the Big 5's inaugural title and the school's first postseason appearance in the 1956 NIT. As head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers in 1979, McKinney introduced the up-tempo system that became known as Showtime, though his tenure ended prematurely following a bicycle accident. He later coached the Indiana Pacers, earning NBA Coach of the Year honors in 1981, and also served as head coach of the Kansas City Kings and as an assistant with Milwaukee and Portland.
