Dossier

Charles Monroe "Jeff" Tesreau (March 5, 1888 – September 24, 1946) was a right-handed pitcher who spent his Major League Baseball career with the New York Giants from 1912 to 1918. Born in Ironton, Missouri, he stood 6 feet 2 inches and earned his nickname for his resemblance to boxer Jim Jeffries. After signing with a St. Louis Browns minor league affiliate in 1909, his contract passed to the Giants in 1910, where he developed the spitball as his signature pitch. In his 1912 rookie season he went 17–7, no-hit the Philadelphia Phillies on September 6, and led the National League with a 1.96 ERA.
