James Patrick Brosnan (October 24, 1929 – June 28, 2014) was a right-handed pitcher who appeared in 385 major league games, largely in relief, between 1954 and 1963 for the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, and Chicago White Sox. A Cincinnati native and Elder High School graduate, he attended Xavier University before signing with the Cubs organization at age 17. Standing 6'4" and listed at 197 pounds, Brosnan was known among teammates as "The Professor" for keeping books in his locker and reading during games — habits that also extended to his career as a published author.
