He played collegiate hockey at Bemidji State University before turning professional, appearing in 180 NHL games between 1972 and 1978 with the Minnesota North Stars, Kansas City Scouts, and Colorado Rockies. He also logged time in the minor leagues, primarily the American Hockey League. On the international stage, McElmury represented the United States at multiple World Championships, including the 1970 and 1971 tournaments, and competed at the 1972 Winter Olympics, where the American team won a silver medal.
