Dossier

James Leslie "Hippo" Vaughn (April 9, 1888 – May 29, 1966) was an American left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball whose career spanned thirteen seasons. He played for the New York Highlanders, the Washington Senators, and the Chicago Cubs from 1913 to 1921. With the Cubs he won more than twenty games in five seasons. His best year came in 1918, when he led the National League in wins with 22, earned run average, and strikeouts to capture the pitching Triple Crown. His nickname derived from his unusually large frame of 6 feet 4 inches and 215 pounds. He is also remembered for a 1917 game in which he pitched nine hitless innings against Fred Toney of the Cincinnati Reds before allowing a run in the tenth.
