Dossier

James Philip "Pepper" Austin (December 8, 1879 – March 6, 1965). A native of Swansea, Wales, he died in Laguna Beach, California. Listed at 155 pounds, switch-hit and threw right. He worked the major leagues from 1909 through 1929, spending the bulk of his career with the St. Louis Browns of the American League. He had turned professional back in 1904, several seasons before his big-league debut. He managed in the majors from 1913 through 1923. Among collectors of the era, his card appearance is anchored by the E97 Briggs Lozenges issue. He is interred at Melrose Abbey Cemetery in Anaheim, California. He was born in Wales — an unusual origin among players of his generation.
