Joe Campanella

Dossier
Joseph Arthur Campanella (1930–1967) was an NFL linebacker and defensive tackle who played six seasons for the Dallas Texans and Baltimore Colts. A Cleveland, Ohio native, he played college football at Ohio State before U.S. Air Force service cut short his eligibility — a military ruling barred airmen from competing in sports at civilian schools, prompting him to enter the 1952 NFL draft early. The Cleveland Browns selected him in the third round. After his playing career, Campanella transitioned to the front office, serving as general manager of the Baltimore Colts from 1966 until his death in February 1967.
