Dossier

Joseph Hilarian Hatten (November 7, 1916 – December 16, 1988) was an American left-handed pitcher who appeared in 233 games in Major League Baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers and Chicago Cubs from 1946 through the middle of 1952. Born in Bancroft, Iowa, he threw left-handed and batted right-handed. Hatten won his major league debut on April 21, 1946, at Ebbets Field, defeating the New York Giants 2–1. He posted four consecutive seasons of double-digit victories as a Dodgers starter from 1946 through 1949, then started only 28 games over his final three seasons. He won 59 games and lost 39 for Brooklyn before being traded to the Chicago Cubs in June 1951 as part of the multi-player deal that brought outfielder Andy Pafko to the Dodgers. The Dodgers won National League pennants in 1947 and 1949 during his tenure, and Hatten appeared in six World Series games, all against the New York Yankees. His career fell within the postwar period of the National League.
