Joseph Anton Marty was a center fielder who played in Major League Baseball from 1937 to 1941 for the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies. Born September 1, 1913, in Sacramento, California, he had been a teammate of Joe DiMaggio with the San Francisco Seals and won the 1936 Pacific Coast League batting title before reaching the majors. With the Cubs he hit the first home run by the franchise in a night game on July 1, 1938, and in the 1938 World Series against the New York Yankees he batted .500 (6-for-12) and drove in 5 of the Cubs' 9 runs. Traded to the Phillies in 1939, he played there through 1941. Over 538 major league games he batted .261 with 44 home runs and 222 RBIs. He died October 4, 1984, in Sacramento, at age 71.
