Joe Tinker
Dossier
Joseph Bert Tinker (1880–1948) held shortstop in the Cubs' Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance triumvirate. Born July 27, 1880 in Muscotah, Kansas, he debuted in 1902 and played fifteen MLB seasons through 1916. He spent 1911 and 1912 as Cubs shortstop, his last with the club, before moving to Cincinnati in 1913 as player-manager and posting a .317 average — his last All-Star caliber year. He continued as a major-league manager through 1916. A 5’9”, 175-pound right-handed thrower and hitter, Tinker appears across our 1909-era card holdings on T204 Ramly, E90-1 American Caramel, E92 Croft's Candy, Cocoa, Dockman, and Nadja Caramels, and E93 Standard Caramel. He died July 27, 1948 in Orlando, Florida — his sixty-eighth birthday — and is buried at Section L, Lot 21 of Greenwood Cemetery there. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1946 alongside Evers and Chance.
