John Bright

Dossier

John Dee Bright (June 11, 1930 – December 14, 1983) played college football for the Drake Bulldogs, where he earned first-team All-American honors in 1951 and won the Nils V. "Swede" Nelson Sportsmanship Award. A racist on-field incident he endured during his college career prompted rule changes by the NCAA. Bright went on to play professionally in the Canadian Football League with the Edmonton Eskimos. He later became a school principal in Edmonton and a prominent role model for Black Canadians. Drake retired his No. 43 jersey — the only player so honored — and he was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
