John Spencer Hughes (born March 18, 1954, in Canada) was a professional ice hockey player who spent the majority of his career in the World Hockey Association from 1974 to 1979. He suited up for five WHA franchises — the Phoenix Roadrunners, Cincinnati Stingers, Houston Aeros, Indianapolis Racers, and Edmonton Oilers — accumulating 148 points and 778 penalty minutes in 372 regular season games. When the WHA folded in 1979, Hughes transitioned to the NHL, playing for the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, and New York Rangers before retiring in 1982. He passed away on April 8, 2020, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
