Dossier

John Landis Bassler (June 3, 1895 – June 29, 1979) was an American professional baseball catcher who played 26 seasons between 1911 and 1937, including nine in the major leagues with the Cleveland Naps (1913–1914) and Detroit Tigers (1921–1927). A beneficiary of Ty Cobb's hitting instruction, Bassler posted a career batting average of .304 and an on-base percentage of .416 — the second highest in major league history for a catcher. His .346 average in 1924 was the highest by an American League catcher to that point. He finished in the top seven of AL MVP voting in 1922, 1923, and 1924.
