Dossier

John Ellis Temple (1927–1994) played second base in Major League Baseball from 1952 to 1964, spending his most prominent years as the leadoff hitter and starting second baseman for the Cincinnati Reds. A six-time All-Star, Temple posted a .300-plus batting average three times with Cincinnati and ranked among the top defensive second basemen of his era. He and shortstop Roy McMillan formed one of the better double-play combinations of the 1950s. Temple also played for the Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles, and Houston Colt .45s, and was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1965.
