Jos Cattarinich

Dossier

Jos Cattarinich (1881–1938) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who grew up in Quebec City, where he also played lacrosse. He served as the first goaltender of the professional Montreal Canadiens during the franchise's inaugural 1910 National Hockey Association season. After amateur goaltender Georges Vézina shut out the Canadiens in a pre-season exhibition game, Cattarinich recommended the club sign Vézina and voluntarily stepped aside. He later became a co-owner of the Montreal Canadiens alongside business partner Leo Dandurand, and held ownership interests in horse racing tracks in both Canada and the United States.
