José Cruz (born August 8, 1947, in Puerto Rico) was a left-handed outfielder who played in Major League Baseball from 1970 to 1988, most prominently with the Houston Astros. Nicknamed "Cheo," he also appeared with the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Yankees. A two-time All-Star, Cruz hit .300 or better for the Astros six times, won two Silver Slugger Awards, and led the National League in hits in 1983. He won four Astros team MVP awards and was the franchise's all-time hits leader with 1,937, a record later surpassed by Craig Biggio.
