Lawrence Thomas Murphy, born March 8, 1961, was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman who played over 20 seasons in the National Hockey League. He suited up for the Los Angeles Kings, Washington Capitals, Minnesota North Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Detroit Red Wings. As a Kings rookie in 1981, he set the record for most points by a defenceman in a single season with 76. Murphy contributed to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships with Pittsburgh in 1991 and 1992, recording 23 points in the 1991 playoffs. He also won consecutive Cups with Detroit in 1997 and 1998. He retired in 2001 having played 1,615 NHL games, the most by a defenceman at the time, with 1,216 career points.
