Lee Handley

Lee Elmer Handley was an American second baseman and third baseman who played in Major League Baseball from 1936 to 1947 for the Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies. Born in Clarion, Iowa, in 1913, he spent most of his career with the Pirates, starting at second base in 1937 before moving to third in 1938. In 1938 he reached career highs in games played (139), hits (153), runs (91), runs batted in (51) and doubles (25). Over ten major league seasons he batted .269 with 15 home runs and 297 runs batted in across 968 games. While with the Phillies in 1947, Handley was cited by Jackie Robinson as the first opposing player to wish him well during his rookie season. Handley died in 1970.
