James Luther "Luke" Sewell (1901–1987) was a right-handed catcher who played Major League Baseball from 1921 to 1942, spending the bulk of his career with the Cleveland Indians before stints with the Washington Senators, Chicago White Sox, and St. Louis Browns. A graduate of the University of Alabama, he was regarded as one of the best defensive catchers of his era. He managed the Browns from 1941 to 1946, guiding the club to the 1944 American League pennant. He later managed the Cincinnati Reds from 1949 to 1952. His brother Joe Sewell was a Hall of Fame shortstop.
