Dossier
Mark "the Bird" Fidrych (August 14, 1954 – April 13, 2009) was a right-handed pitcher who played his entire five-season MLB career with the Detroit Tigers. A native of Northborough, Massachusetts, he attended Algonquin Regional High School and Worcester Academy before being selected by Detroit in the 10th round of the 1974 amateur draft. In 1976, his rookie season, the 6-foot-3 Fidrych led the major leagues with a 2.34 ERA and posted a 19–9 record, earning the American League Rookie of the Year award. Injuries cut short his career shortly after that breakout year.
