Mickey Stanley

Dossier

Mitchell Jack "Mickey" Stanley (born July 20, 1942, Grand Rapids, Michigan) played center field for the Detroit Tigers from 1964 to 1978, appearing in 1,516 games with the organization after signing in 1960. A four-time American League Gold Glove Award winner (1968, 1969, 1970, 1973), he ranked among baseball's all-time leaders in career fielding percentage by an outfielder. In the lead-up to the 1968 World Series, manager Mayo Smith moved Stanley to shortstop — a gamble that contributed to Detroit's championship that year. He was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.
