Dossier

Montia Calvin Kennedy (May 11, 1922 – March 1, 1997) was an American left-handed pitcher who appeared in Major League Baseball from 1946 to 1953, all with the New York Giants. A native of Amelia, Virginia, he stood 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighed 185 pounds. In his rookie season of 1946 he led the National League in bases on balls, issuing 116 in 186 2/3 innings. Kennedy worked in 249 games over his career, 127 of them as a starter, allowing 928 hits and 495 walks with 411 strikeouts across 961 innings pitched. He was a member of the 1951 Giants, who overcame a large midseason deficit to tie the Brooklyn Dodgers and win a three-game pennant playoff. In the 1951 World Series against the New York Yankees, he appeared twice in relief, pitching a perfect ninth inning in Game 4 but surrendering a two-run home run to Phil Rizzuto in Game 5. After baseball, Kennedy worked for the Richmond Police Department until his retirement. His career spanned the postwar era of the National League.
