Dossier

Oscar Charles Gamble (December 20, 1949 – January 31, 2018) was a Major League Baseball outfielder and designated hitter who played 17 seasons from 1969 to 1985. Born in Ramer, Alabama, he attended George Washington Carver High School in Montgomery before being discovered in a semi-professional league by Buck O'Neil, then scouting for the Chicago Cubs. Drafted by Chicago in the sixteenth round, Gamble went on to play for seven franchises, including two stints each with the White Sox and Yankees, as well as the Phillies, Indians, Padres, and Rangers. His quip about the Yankees' disorganization — "They don't think it be like it is, but it do" — became one of baseball's most quoted lines.
