Oscar Vitt

Dossier

Oscar Joseph "Ossie" Vitt (January 4, 1890 – January 31, 1963) was an American Major League Baseball third baseman who played in the American League from 1912 to 1921, primarily with the Detroit Tigers (1912–1918) and Boston Red Sox (1919–1921). A San Francisco sandlot product, he broke into professional ball with the Pacific Coast League's San Francisco Seals in 1911. As Detroit's regular third baseman from 1915 through 1917, he posted a career batting average of .238 but earned recognition for his defense, leading American League third basemen in putouts, assists, and fielding percentage in both 1915 and 1916. He later managed the Cleveland Indians from 1938 to 1940.
