Paul William "Bear" Bryant (September 11, 1913 – January 26, 1983) was an American college football coach best known for leading the University of Alabama Crimson Tide from 1958 to 1982. Before Alabama, he served as head coach at Maryland, Kentucky, and Texas A&M. During his 25-year tenure at Alabama, Bryant won six national championships and 13 conference championships. When he retired in 1982, he held the all-time record for wins by a college head coach with 323 victories. He was recognizable on the sidelines by his houndstooth hat and habit of carrying a rolled-up game plan.
