Dossier

Paul Howard Trout, nicknamed "Dizzy," was a right-handed pitcher who played in Major League Baseball from 1939 to 1957. Born June 29, 1915, in Sandcut, Indiana, he spent the bulk of his career with the Detroit Tigers, where he was a frontline starter through the 1940s. He led the American League in wins with 20 in 1943, but his finest season came in 1944, when he went 27-14 and led the league in earned run average (2.12), complete games (33), shutouts (7), and innings pitched (352-1/3). He was a member of the Tigers club that won the 1945 World Series, going 1-1 with a 0.66 ERA in that Series. Trout was named to the All-Star team in 1944 and 1947. He pitched mainly for Detroit through 1952, finished that season with the Boston Red Sox, and made a brief return with the Baltimore Orioles in 1957. Over his career he compiled a 170-161 record with a 3.23 ERA and 1,256 strikeouts, and was an unusually capable hitter for a pitcher, with 20 career home runs. After retiring he broadcast Tigers games from 1953 to 1955. His son, Steve Trout, also pitched in the majors. He died February 28, 1972, in Harvey, Illinois.
