Pettis Norman (1939–2025) was a tight end in the National Football League who played for the Dallas Cowboys and the San Diego Chargers. He grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, and played college football at Johnson C. Smith University, a historically Black university in the CIAA. At Johnson C. Smith he played both ways, earned team MVP honors as a freshman, and was a two-time All-CIAA selection. His senior season included a five-reception, 133-yard, two-touchdown performance. He was drafted into the NFL following his college career and went on to play professionally through the 1960s and into the 1970s.
