Ralph Branca (January 6, 1926 – November 23, 2016), nicknamed "Hawk," was an American professional baseball pitcher who played 12 seasons in Major League Baseball from 1944 through 1956. Born in Mount Vernon, New York, he attended New York University before entering the majors. Branca played primarily for the Brooklyn Dodgers, with brief stints with the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees. A three-time All-Star, he is best remembered for surrendering Bobby Thomson's walk-off home run to the New York Giants in a 1951 playoff — the hit known as the "Shot Heard 'Round the World."
