Randy Gumpert

Dossier
Randall Pennington Gumpert (1918-2008) was an American right-handed pitcher who appeared in 261 games over ten Major League Baseball seasons between 1936 and 1952. He pitched for the Philadelphia Athletics, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox, and Washington Senators. Signed by Athletics manager Connie Mack in 1936 straight out of Birdsboro High School in Pennsylvania, Gumpert reached the majors as a teenager. After service-era interruptions and time in the minors, he resurfaced with the Yankees in 1946 and posted an 11-3 record with a 2.31 earned run average over 33 games that season. He was named to the American League All-Star team in 1951 while with the White Sox. On May 1, 1951, pitching in relief at Comiskey Park, Gumpert surrendered the first major-league home run of Mickey Mantle's career. After his playing days he worked as a manager, scout, and coach in professional baseball. Gumpert died in 2008 at age 90.
