Randy Jones

Dossier

Randall Leo Jones (January 12, 1950 – November 18, 2025), nicknamed "Junkman," was a left-handed starting pitcher who spent the bulk of his Major League Baseball career with the San Diego Padres. Born in Fullerton, California, Jones attended Chapman College before reaching the majors. Known for his sinker, exceptional control, and ability to induce groundball outs, he earned two All-Star selections and won the National League Cy Young Award in 1976, after finishing second in 1975. A nerve injury in his final 1976 start curtailed his effectiveness; he later pitched two seasons with the New York Mets. The Padres retired his number 35 and inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 1999.
