Richard Michael "Goose" Gossage (born July 5, 1951) was a right-handed relief pitcher who spent 22 seasons in Major League Baseball between 1972 and 1994, pitching for nine teams with his best years split between the New York Yankees and San Diego Padres. One of the earliest manifestations of the modern closer, Gossage overpowered hitters with a 100 mph fastball and led the American League in saves three times. He finished his career with 310 saves, 1,002 games pitched, and a 0.77 ERA in 1981. From 1977 through 1983 he never posted an ERA above 2.62.
