Born in Chicago, Illinois, he attended Fenger High School on the city's South Side, where he played end on offense and safety on defense under the era's limited-substitution rules. As a senior in 1954, he caught 10 touchdown passes and helped lead the Fenger Titans to a South-Central City League title with an 8–1 record. He earned spots on both the City League All-Star team and the South Chicago All-Star first team that year.
