Riggs Stephenson

Dossier

Jackson Riggs Stephenson (1898–1985), nicknamed Old Hoss, was a left fielder in Major League Baseball who attended the University of Alabama, where he also played football and earned All-Southern fullback honors in 1919 and 1920. A shoulder injury sustained during a 1920 football game followed him into his professional career. He played for the Cleveland Indians from 1921 to 1925 before joining the Chicago Cubs, where he remained through 1934. Injuries and platooning limited him to full-time duty only in 1927–1929 and 1932, yet he retired with a career batting average of .336.
