Ron Northey

Ronald James Northey (1920–1971) was an American outfielder who played 12 seasons in Major League Baseball. Born in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, he batted left-handed and threw right-handed. Northey played for the Philadelphia Phillies (1942–1944, 1946–1947, 1957), St. Louis Cardinals (1947–1949), Cincinnati Reds (1950), Chicago Cubs (1950, 1952), and Chicago White Sox (1955–1957). Over 1,084 games and 3,172 at bats, he batted .276 with a .352 on-base percentage and .450 slugging percentage, recording 874 hits, 172 doubles, 108 home runs, and 513 runs batted in. He was particularly effective as a pinch hitter, appearing in 297 games in that role and batting .288 with nine pinch-hit home runs and 75 runs batted in. After his playing career, Northey served as a coach with the Pittsburgh Pirates under manager Danny Murtaugh, a former teammate, from 1961 to 1963. His career spanned the wartime and postwar eras of both major leagues.
