Roy Face
Dossier
ElRoy Leon Face (February 20, 1928 – February 12, 2026) was a right-handed relief pitcher who spent nearly all of his Major League Baseball career with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1953 to 1969. Standing 5 feet 7½ inches and weighing 150 pounds, he built his game around exceptional control and a forkball that became his signature pitch. A converted starter, Face was a pioneer of the closer role and set National League records for career games pitched (846) and career saves (191). He still holds the NL record for career wins in relief with 96.
