Rube Benton

Dossier
John Cleave "Rube" Benton (June 27, 1890 – December 12, 1937) was a right-handed pitcher who spent the bulk of his Major League career with the Cincinnati Reds (1910–15, 1923–25) and New York Giants (1915–21). He broke in with Cincinnati after the Reds purchased his contract from Macon of the South Atlantic League for $7,000 in 1910. His most productive early season came in 1912, when he led the National League in games pitched (50), games started (39), batters faced, and batters hit by pitch, finishing 18–20. Benton later pitched in the minors with the Minneapolis Millers through 1933 and was killed in an automobile accident in 1937.
