Rube Waddell
Dossier
George Edward "Rube" Waddell (1876–1914) closed his big-league career just before the 1911 card boom but lingered long enough in the minors to remain a recognizable face. Born October 13, 1876 in Bradford, Pennsylvania, he debuted in 1897 and pitched fourteen MLB seasons through 1910, primarily for the St. Louis Browns. By 1911 he was with the Minneapolis Millers of the American Association — still pitching in 1912 and 1913 before tuberculosis took him on April 1, 1914 at age 37. A 196-pound left-handed thrower who batted right, Waddell appears in our 1909-era card holdings on E93 Standard Caramel. He is buried at Block 5, Lot 182, Grave 2 of Mission Burial Park South in San Antonio, Texas. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1946.
