Gordon Scott Appleton (February 20, 1942 – March 2, 1992) was a defensive tackle from McCulloch County, Texas who played college football at the University of Texas, where he was a three-year starter and tri-captain. As a senior in 1963, he earned consensus All-American honors and won the Outland Trophy — the first Texas player to do so — while helping the Longhorns claim the national championship. In the 1964 Cotton Bowl he recorded 12 tackles and two unofficial sacks of Roger Staubach. Appleton went on to play professionally in the AFL for the Houston Oilers, San Diego Chargers, and Oakland Raiders.
