Steve Payne is a Canadian left winger who played his entire NHL career with the Minnesota North Stars from 1978 to 1988. Drafted 19th overall in the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft, Payne appeared in 613 regular-season games, scoring 228 goals and adding 238 assists for 466 points. His strongest season came in 1979–80, when he posted career highs of 42 goals and 85 points with a +37 rating. He helped lead Minnesota to their first Stanley Cup Finals appearance in 1981, recording 17 goals and 12 assists in 19 playoff games. He retired as the franchise's all-time leading left wing scorer and all-time leading playoff scorer. Cervical spine injuries ended his career.
