Timothy Paul Stoddard was born January 24, 1953, in East Chicago, Indiana. The 6-foot-7 forward was a member of the 1971 East Chicago Washington High School Senators basketball team, which finished 29–0 and claimed the Indiana state championship. His teammates included Pete Trgovich and Junior Bridgeman. Stoddard went on to play basketball at North Carolina State University under Coach Norm Sloan, where he was a two-sport athlete. He is one of only two men to have appeared in both an NCAA Final Four and a World Series, sharing that distinction with fellow East Chicago Washington alumnus Kenny Lofton.
