Dossier

Thomas Joseph Byrne (1919–2007) was a left-handed starting pitcher who played in the American League from 1943 through 1957, spending most of his career with the New York Yankees. He also appeared with the St. Louis Browns (1951–52), Chicago White Sox, and Washington Senators (both 1953). A graduate of Wake Forest College, Byrne served as a Navy ensign during World War II aboard the destroyer USS Ordronaux, where he worked as gunnery officer in the Mediterranean. A hard-throwing pitcher known for pitching inside, he struggled with control throughout his career, earning the nickname "Wild Man."
