Dossier

Thomas David Henrich (1913–2009), nicknamed "Old Reliable" and "the Clutch," played his entire Major League career as a right fielder and first baseman for the New York Yankees from 1937 to 1942 and again from 1946 to 1950. Originally signed by the Cleveland Indians in 1934, he was declared a free agent in 1937 after Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis ruled the Indians had concealed him illegally. A left-handed batter, Henrich led the American League in triples twice and in runs scored once, and hit 20 or more home runs four times. He is best remembered for his World Series performances, including hitting the first walk-off home run in Series history in Game 1 of the 1949 Fall Classic.
