Roman Gabriel was a professional football quarterback who played in the National Football League from the early 1960s through the mid-1970s. Born on August 5, 1940, in Wilmington, North Carolina, he starred at North Carolina State University, earning two-time All-American honors and back-to-back ACC Player of the Year recognition in 1960 and 1961. Selected second overall in the 1962 NFL Draft, Gabriel spent eleven seasons with the Los Angeles Rams before finishing his career with five seasons in Philadelphia. He was the first Filipino-American quarterback in the NFL and the first and only Asian American to win the NFL Most Valuable Player award, earning that honor in 1969.
