Topsy Hartsel (sic) Hartsell

Topsy Hartsel (sic) Hartsell was born 1874, and died 1944. He was associated with the Philadelphia Athletics of the American League. He batted and threw left-handed. His likeness survives in the cardboard record on the E125 American Caramel Die Cuts issue. The E125 American Caramel Die Cuts issue belongs to the so-called caramel-card category — small color cards distributed as premiums in candy boxes during the deadball era. Career statistics and full game-by-game records for many deadball-era contributors are incomplete in the surviving sources, leaving the cards themselves as a primary witness to the player's place in the professional game.
