Van Mungo
Dossier
Van Lingle Mungo (June 8, 1911 – February 12, 1985) was a right-handed pitcher who played in Major League Baseball from 1931 to 1945, primarily with the Brooklyn Dodgers and later the New York Giants. Born in Pageland, South Carolina, he began his professional career with the Charlotte Hornets at age 18. A five-time All-Star, Mungo led the National League in strikeouts in 1936. Known for his hard fastball and colorful off-field personality, he posted two 18-win seasons across his career but was considered by many to have underperformed relative to his raw ability.
