Walter Anton Berger (1905–1988) played outfield in Major League Baseball from 1930 to 1940, spending his most prominent years with the Boston Braves. A four-time All-Star, he set a rookie home run record with 38 in his first season — a mark that stood for 57 years. He averaged 28 home runs, 103 RBI, and a .307 batting average over his first seven seasons, and started in center field for the National League in the first All-Star Game. In 1935 he led the NL with 34 home runs and 130 RBI. He also played for the New York Giants, Cincinnati Reds, and Philadelphia Phillies.
